Last year has forced us all to navigate what we have been referring to as “the new normal.” While this mainly consists of public closures, wearing masks, and incessantly sanitizing our hands and spaces, I believe we can all agree that one of the more difficult parts has been social distancing and taking time apart from our loved ones. This time has tested all of us on how to maintain and grow our relationships from a distance. While this time has been so difficult to navigate, one of the brighter spots is the time and space it has given us to read, and even join virtual book club.

We normally have planners that are filled with work schedules, appointments, activities, etc. that are bursting at the seams, and now we have time to select a new book and the ability to really digest its pages. The best part of joining a book club (other than the wine and appetizers) is the sense of community. The feeling of growing so excited about what you’re reading and being able to discuss all of those thoughts and feelings that consume us as we read. Time’s are tough, but here are 10 Reasons Why You Should Join A Virtual Book Club.

10. Motivation and Accountability to Carve Time out for Reading

Even when we are not meeting face-to-face, we get back what we put into a book club meeting. Having a deadline to meet when reading a book is the ultimate motivation for swapping out our nightly Netflix binges to create some quiet space to read in.

9. The Comfort of Joining a Club From Home

It goes without saying that we are all itching to get out of the house and socialize again, but knowing that your book community is virtually right there at your fingertips is the ultimate convenience. Even after this pandemic is over, sometimes you just want a night-in!

8. Creating a Community

As much as we would all love for our close knit circle of friends to be bibliophiles, that’s just not always the case. When you join a book club, you are guaranteed to share all of the thoughts and feelings you have on your book, and that just makes the reading experience so much better.

7. Making New (Virtual Book Club) Friends

It is incredible the connections that we are able to make with the growth of technology and social media. Joining a book club gives you access to (virtually) meet people from all over that you might not normally have the opportunity to. Yes, this space is created to bond and reflect over books, but it also leaves potential to form a deeper connection with others. Are you a devoted yogi? Knitting enthusiast? Members of those communities may very well be members of your book club!

6. Staying Connected While We are Seperated

With Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, Facebook Groups, Instagram, etc., there are plenty of platforms available for us to do our best to stay connected with each other during times like these.

5. Carving Out Time for Yourself

It is so important for us to find hobbies and passions that give us meaning in our lives. Making time and space for ourselves is not always easy, and that is why sometimes we need to schedule time aside for putting our energy into what brings us joy. Meeting with a book club for an hour or so, whether it’s once a week or once a month, allows us to have that blocked off time for putting energy into what brings us joy.

4. Flexibility

Things come up, and that’s okay! Having a virtual platform gives you the flexibility to accommodate meetings to your schedule. Have an appointment and need to log off 15 minutes early? Dealing with a tough deadline at work and just want to watch the recorded meeting later? No sweat.

3. Deeper Understandings and Varying Points of View

Laying out discussion questions in a book club gives us the opportunity to take a deeper look into the book we just read. Participating in conversations with a diverse group of people gives us the opportunity to see sides of a story from different perspectives. This is the perfect opportunity to learn something new.

2. Feeling Inspired

Connecting with members of our reading and writing community gives us the opportunity to feel inspired to read more, write more, and learn new things.

1. Discovering New Books

This might be the best part. With an overwhelming catalog through our local libraries and bookstores, choosing a new book to read can seem overwhelming. A book club might push you to read a book you never would have thought to pick out for yourself. Discovering new authors, books, trying out different genres, etc. is what it’s all about!
